CES 2015
Another year, Another CES, with 2015’s Consumer Electronics Show offering product announcements that are as much business, as consumer related.
  • Faster Charger

Almost all businesses use mobile phones and that means relying on the charger and the time it takes to charge a phone. Think how often somebody in your office has forgotten their charger or left their phone on the desk charging whilst they’ve gone elsewhere.

A company called Storedot have been showing off a new technology to allow a phone to be fully charged in just one minute. Whilst the product is not ready for the shelves, they’re also planning how it can be used to make laptops freer from the charger and enable an electric car to be charged in 3 minutes.

  • Open IOT & Blackberry

The Internet of Things refers to the growing number of previously standalone objects that are increasingly coming ready-to-connect with the internet and each other seamlessly. For consumers, thermostats, lights and appliances are good examples. For business, sensors could be used to track vehicles & deliveries, monitor manufacturing systems and assist asset management.

Beyond the sensors, businesses will need to make sure their networks and internet connectivity are set up to securely manage the extra data flows, as well as ensuring there’s sufficient data storage.

At CES Samsung has been promoting an open culture for IOT to help interoperability and Intel announced new tiny, button-sized processors aimed at IOT. Meanwhile, Blackberry has launched its own platform, with businesses in mind. Its first targets are asset tracking and connected car applications, with energy and health-care markets to follow.

  • Hardware from Dell

Dell has been showing off new laptops and tablets that will suit mobile workers. The Dell XPS 13 laptop packs a 13-inch screen into a smaller body that would be more suited to a 12-inch screen. Likewise a very thin 8.4 inch Android tablet with minimal bezels round the top and sides.

  • Use any pen

Lenova has a new tablet that allows pens and pencils rather than specialist styli to be used on the “AnyPen” screen.

  • Curved Screens

There were plenty of curves on show at CES, with curved 4K TV’s in abundance. Also starting to appear were large curved monitors. As users sit closer to monitors, the curve can help make the watching experience more comfortable. For users who currently need a second display, the larger displays could reduce the need for an additional screen and potentially reduce the purchase & energy costs.
